Assisted Suicide Bill: It must not be allowed to stand


…On April 12, New Jersey’s Medical Aid in Dying for the Terminally Ill Act passed by a single vote. A more accurate title would be the “New Jersey Physician-Assisted Suicide Act.” It essentially gives doctors carte blanche to write a prescription for drugs to end their patients’ lives.

Despite the act’s noble rallying cry of patient dignity and freedom, three individuals saw through the rhetoric.  They realized the law is in fact a dangerous and frightening path leading straight toward euthanasia…

Although the law claims that participation in assisted suicide is completely voluntary, professionals unwilling to provide a patient with fatal pharmaceuticals must help the patient by finding someone else who will…

Just days ago, the National Council on Disability (NCD) released its report on assisted suicide.  It reaffirms the stance that assisted suicide poses an imminent danger to many Americans and should not be legal in the U.S.  According to the report, these laws encourage insurers to deny expensive, life-sustaining medical treatment, offering instead subsidies on fatal pharmaceuticals.

The NCD also warns that potential misdiagnosis could frighten patients into ending their lives.  Furthermore, individuals with depression are at elevated risk from fatal prescriptions, while people with disabilities will inevitably be demoralized knowing that many will view their decision to live as a burden on society.

Heartbreakingly, insurance companies are already taking advantage of similar laws elsewhere.
