Mom lost daughter to suicide, fights for shutdown of assisted suicide website

Jackie Bieber has been living every mom’s worst nightmare since May of last year.

“On May 22, 2019, my daughter took her life, with the help of an assisted suicide website,” Bieber said.

Her daughter, Shawn, battled depression and anxiety for years.

Shawn had been seeing a therapist and taking medicine.

Jackie Bieber says, if it was not for the assisted suicide website and the chatroom of people encouraging her to take her own life, her daughter could still be alive today.

“She had told them, ‘I’m going to do this,’ and no one said, ‘Maybe go talk to someone,'” Bieber said. “She had even said, ‘I feel bad because my mom is right down the hall.’ They said, ‘We are kind of worried because it might not be 100 percent if she hears you, she might call the police and it might not work.’ That is what they were concerned about. Then they said, ‘Good luck and safe travels.'”

Since the day her daughter died, Bieber has been advocating for Shawn’s Law.

“It strengthens penalties against anyone who assists in a suicide, but especially anyone who is under the age of 18 or has a mental disability,” Bieber said.

In addition to criminal penalties, Shawn’s Law would shut down assisted suicide websites and chatrooms. Bieber also wants more funding for mental healthcare.
