NY Legislative leaders throw cold water on assisted suicide this year

Both state legislative leaders were bearish on Tuesday about the chances that what supporters call “medical aid in dying” will win approval from lawmakers before they end the legislative session in June.

The leaders comments at a Times Union event Tuesday morning came hours before advocates rallied at the state Capitol in support of providing the end-of-life choice.

Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie said he has not yet had an in-depth conversation with members about legislation to legalize aid in dying, dubbed physician-assisted suicide by its critics.

“That is a very, very sensitive subject and would really have to be thought out,” the Bronx Democrat said. “So I’m not sure if it can or will be done by the end of session.”
