Statement on UK Assisted Suicide Bill

Statement by the Patients’ Rights Action Fund:

The slow death of the bill to allow assisted suicide in England and Wales takes into account the serious problems with institutionalizing death in place of care, and it rightfully upholds the rights of people with disabilities and mental health conditions. The House of Lords gave it real scrutiny, as is warranted, and the bill did not pass muster. In fact, the House of Lords did not kill this bill, it was so terrible that the lead proponent among the peers had over 70 amendments himself.

This bill died by suicide, aided by members of Parliament who recklessly pushed forward dangerous legislation. Public opinion is shifting against legalizing assisted suicide, and here in the U.S. we hope that the states and the courts take action to protect patient rights and put the brakes on death-by-prescription.
